Excerpt from “A Land Where Old People are Thrown Away”
Across the hall there was an open door and inside a little red haired lady sitting in a wheel chair was giving me a come-here sign with her index finger.
“Did you call me Ma’am?”
“I sure did honey, come on in and tell me your name.” I told her.
“Mines Leffy Cobb. You’re too young to be a resident here. Just visiting?”
“Sort of,” I said.
“You in a hurry?”
“No, Ma’am, I guess not.”
“Why don’t you come over here and sit on the bed closer to me, so I can get a better look at you?”
I did as she requested and after looking me over she replied, “My! You sure are handsome.” She leaned in closer, “I been married four times and there’s two fellers in here wants to be the fifth. If I ain’t careful in my scheduling of them, there’s going to be a fight over me.”
All of a sudden it didn’t seem like a safe place to be. As I stood to excuse myself, a man about Leffy’s age wobbled through the door. He had on pajamas covered with a Mickey Mouse house coat, and a pair of hound dog bedroom slippers flopped around on his feet. His hair was slicked back and the suffocating aroma of cheap cologne preceded him into the room. He stopped cold when he saw me, “Who is this feller, Leffy?” I extended my hand but he ignored it.
“Ever time I turn my back there’s some jack leg trying to beat my time,” The hound dog man replied as if he expected to catch a competitor vying for Leffy’s affections.
“See what I mean? No, Leroy, this is Lavelle Rook. He’s here visiting and we just getting acquainted. Where is your hospitality?”
